    We just came across another great documentary (we can't get enough of these). Frenchie is the latest in the This Must Be The Place series that explore the ideas of home; what makes them, how they represent us and why we need them. This edition was produced and directed by Ben Wu and David Usui, of Lost & Found Films. We hopped over to check out some of the other videos and they were equally as compelling and well done.

  • OREO Wonderfilled Anthem

    Oreo has really upped their game over the past several months. This, though, has to be some of our favorite work we've seen from the delicious cookie maker. The new spot is the visual brainchild of The Martin Agency. We love love the animation in this piece. It's got a great feel and energy to it — not to mention it's upbeat and cute as hell.

  • The Cave

    Nicolas Heller, son of well known design critic Steven Heller, just finished up this short film piece called The Cave in which he visually explores the deep dark recesses of his father's study. The depth of stuff contained within Heller's den is amazing. It contains a variety of design artifacts that Heller has used in a few of his books on political and counter culture.

    The film work is nicely done and features some great slow pans throughout the dusty, eclectic collection. He even has a couple of pans in there that are wholly unique in which the camera moves by an item and then turns and zooms — all at the same time.

  • The CSS Zen Garden V2

    We were over the top to see Dave Shea's post about the CSS Zen Garden turning 10. What got us up out of our seat was seeing that Shea is resurrecting the garden and opening it up for another round of submissions. The new version of the project is getting a major overhaul as the base template is updated to html5 and the flood gates are opened, allowing css3 as part of the experiment.

    For those not in the know, the Zen Garden was one of the progenitors of modern web design. It was an experiment that introduced a generation of web designers to the power of web standards and css-based design. The project ran for several years and garnered hundreds of submitted designs over its life. We're hoping that this round will be equally successful.

  • The Bee's Knees

    We had not come across illustrator, Lena Podesta's work before. When we did finally roll across it we were hooked. We really like the range of style in Lena's work. There's a retro, classic comic strip style in some of the pieces while others feel more contemporary and modern — a nice counterbalance that works for a variety of projects.

    We are seriously thinking about doing an ongoing series of just some of the odd stuff we come across as we're looking through work being done here in Portland. It's plentiful and just so, so weird.

    The video for techno outfit DØS.pütin is a perfect example. The video for Waist'd Fånk went up about 10 hours ago, and it is just so odd (odd and weird good that is) that we had to share. We love the track, but the video we're still trying to process. What is up with these guys exercising? Hilarious! It's this kind of outright oddity that keeps us coming back to this work every single day.
