Made by Hand / No 4 The Cigar Shop from Made by Hand on Vimeo.

Here's a new short documentary in the Made by Hand series. The series highlights makers and how their hand-made creations impact their lives. This installment explores Don Antonio Martinez's 2nd generation hand rolled cigar shop. The business is now run by Martinez's sons who maintain the tradition of creating quality, hand rolled cigars. The black and white stock creates the perfect setting for this documentary and contrasts so nicely with the stark white clouds of smoke from the cigars that are being consumed throughout the piece.

  • Zachary Quinto vs. Leonard Nimoy: "The Challenge"

This is fairly humorous if you're any type of Trek fan. The rivalry between Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy is a new one, but could be interesting if explored further. Nimoy by far is the star in this web film for Audi. His dialogue and deadpan delivery is great. This spot was put together by pmk-bnc.

  • EVENT: Font Detective, Extra Bold

    / Comments (0)

Are you gearing up for the AIGA Portland-sponsored event, Font Detective, Extra Bold, coming up next week? There are still seats left, and this is going to be an extremely interesting event. We'll be giving away some tickets this week (Thursday) via the Twitterverse, so stay tuned. Here's a bit more info about the event:

Thomas Phinney, “guru of fonts and typography” from Extensis, will be discussing and showing evidence from several of the cases he has been called into as a typographic consultant, including a forged will, legislated point size requirements, a seemingly fake rabbi, and the forged documents about President Bush’s National Guard service. Attendees will learn how mistakes in typography, printing and font selection ruined what could have otherwise been perfectly good forgeries!

This event is part of The Wild — a series of events that takes on the gritty, indie, gettin’-shit-done world of artists, makers, writers and cultural iconoclasts who are doing the creative work that juices up our fair city’s awesomeness.

You can read more about Thomas and the event details over on the AIGA Portland event page. Go get yourself signed up for this. It's gonna be one-of-a-kind!

  • Let Fun Reign

Struck was recently approached by Lagoon Amusement Park to help promote the iconic Utah destination. After a deep research and discovery process, they decided to head in two directions to showcase the park in a couple of different ways.

The first is a solid effort framing the family experience at Lagoon. It's a super-polished spot that feels much like the commercials we are seeing from larger companies that are currently hyper-focusing on the individual - placing, in this case, the family experience squarely as the focus.

The second spot, aimed at the youth experience, is a complete turn of the coin. It's created as a more humorous, definitely tongue-in-cheek effort meant to spark interest amongst the younger set, while letting them know where the fun is.

  • Hoefler & Frere-Jones to Receive AIGA Gold Medal

    / Comments (0)

Typographers, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones (better known as Hoefler & Frere-Jones) are being honored with an AIGA medal for their contributions to the field of type design. The dynamic duo has been creating some of the most memorable and meaningful type families for the past couple decades and the work they produce is nothing short of beautiful. Check out the AIGA announcement article that does a great job of retrospecting their amazing careers. We're gigantic fan boys of their work, but what we're equally impressed with is that they actually own the typography.com url. Huge congrats to them both.
