Are you gearing up for the AIGA Portland-sponsored event, Font Detective, Extra Bold, coming up next week? There are still seats left, and this is going to be an extremely interesting event. We'll be giving away some tickets this week (Thursday) via the Twitterverse, so stay tuned. Here's a bit more info about the event:

Thomas Phinney, “guru of fonts and typography” from Extensis, will be discussing and showing evidence from several of the cases he has been called into as a typographic consultant, including a forged will, legislated point size requirements, a seemingly fake rabbi, and the forged documents about President Bush’s National Guard service. Attendees will learn how mistakes in typography, printing and font selection ruined what could have otherwise been perfectly good forgeries!

This event is part of The Wild — a series of events that takes on the gritty, indie, gettin’-shit-done world of artists, makers, writers and cultural iconoclasts who are doing the creative work that juices up our fair city’s awesomeness.

You can read more about Thomas and the event details over on the AIGA Portland event page. Go get yourself signed up for this. It's gonna be one-of-a-kind!

  • Let Fun Reign

Struck was recently approached by Lagoon Amusement Park to help promote the iconic Utah destination. After a deep research and discovery process, they decided to head in two directions to showcase the park in a couple of different ways.

The first is a solid effort framing the family experience at Lagoon. It's a super-polished spot that feels much like the commercials we are seeing from larger companies that are currently hyper-focusing on the individual - placing, in this case, the family experience squarely as the focus.

The second spot, aimed at the youth experience, is a complete turn of the coin. It's created as a more humorous, definitely tongue-in-cheek effort meant to spark interest amongst the younger set, while letting them know where the fun is.

Typographers, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones (better known as Hoefler & Frere-Jones) are being honored with an AIGA medal for their contributions to the field of type design. The dynamic duo has been creating some of the most memorable and meaningful type families for the past couple decades and the work they produce is nothing short of beautiful. Check out the AIGA announcement article that does a great job of retrospecting their amazing careers. We're gigantic fan boys of their work, but what we're equally impressed with is that they actually own the typography.com url. Huge congrats to them both.

We're really liking these new mugs that designer Tim Weakland put together for Portland-based studio, Epipheo. The illustrations definitely have that trademark feel that is used across the studio's site. We also love the handmade typography and quick sketch artwork wrapping around the mug. These would essentially be fun to drink anything out of. Nice work.

The goal of the project was to promote the event while generating interest throughout the social-verse. The hope was that the they could generate interest while gathering as much support and participation as possible.

Blue from Aymeric Seydoux on Vimeo.

A slow news day means we get to dig into our ever growing list of cool animation and documentaries to bring you a little somethin'. We actually just came across this short by Aymeric Seydoux about the dangers of being alone in space and space madness. We love the style of art in this 3 minute short and found the story to be just perfect. Enjoy.

  • Laid to Rest

When we crashed the Be Honest party last week we took in just an amazing amount of visual stimuli from all the great designers on hand. As we were checking out everyone's stuff we came across the Laid to Rest project by PSU senior, Chance Tagg. The social experiment was part of Tagg's senior thesis, and really caught our attention.

The premise is simple, we all carry around our personal baggage that haunts us on a daily basis. If we are to take a cue from the finality of life we know that when people are laid to rest we kind of let go of all the unresolved emotions and thoughts we might have about that person through the ritual of the funeral and mourning process. So, why not combine the two and get rid of the personal baggage by holding a funeral for all those pesky annoyances we carry around with us everyday.

The site, which was conceived of as a social experiment, gives you all the tools to plan for the worldly demise of your emotional baggage. When you get there print out the coffin template, assemble on a nice card stock, decorate in a fashion that represents your personal foibles and then burry, burn, rip, shred or nuke the coffin in any fashion you see fit. A few words at the end and you've saved thousands in therapist bills. And to prove you've done the deed you can submit photos and tweet it using a custom hash tag. Nice work Chance.
