Local illustrator, Jennifer Reynolds, has started an off-shoot website featuring her custom illustrated maps for weddings. The site features a small variety of her stylish cartography, but does a good job of showing off her unique style and some of the work she has completed for couples tying the knot.

  • Recap: PSU's Fresh Graduate Show (June Edition)

    / Comments (0)

We had the opportunity to take in Fresh, the PSU graduate show last week. We've been to a total of three of the grad showcase events in the past year, and they are quickly becoming one of our favorites. The quality of work coming out of the graphic design program at PSU is always high, but it seems that each time we attend the the bar has been raised a bit higher than the prior event.

While the Fresh event is much smaller than Be Honest, which was held a couple months ago, the setting is much more intimate and friendly. The overall tone is also much more relaxed and conversational, which makes having one-on-one conversations with the young designers easy. Union/Pine hosted the event, and the woodsy, open nature of their space really helps to cement the experience. There were a lot of folks on hand, so the space was filled with fantastic, design-related discussion. That coupled with the beautiful work on display made this one of our favorite experiences with PSU so far.

  • Impressed Brewing

Here's some work coming out of the student camp by Parker Gohrick. The local designer created this contemporary, flat letterpress design for mythical beer maker, Impressed Brewing. We love the clean, minimalist design of the elements and the overall muted tones used throughout the piece. The crowning piece to us, though, is that Patrick used letterpress as the printing medium for this student work — a slightly more unconventional method that we normally see in student work and especially in packaging design. The result, though, is undeniable. The embossed nature of the logo and other elements give this work a tactile, tangible feel.

  • Industry: Wieden + Kennedy Take Grand Prix at Cannes

Heineken Legend II - The Date from Paul Schleicher on Vimeo.

Wieden + Kennedy just pulled out a huge win at Cannes — taking home the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix for their recent work with Heineken. The campaign entitled, Legendary Journey: Justifying a Premium the World Over features the upscale traveler who finds himself in a variety of adventures the world over. Everywhere he goes, though, Heineken is always there like a stalwart friend. The campaign was hugely successful and saw increases in sales and brand awareness in every country the campaign ran.

Now before writing this off as just being another award won by some studio in Portland, realize this is no ordinary award. There are a variety of hurdles that have to be jumped through to even be considered for this. In order to to enter, they campaign had to win a Lion award the year before. The entrants must then submit a 40-page paper explaining the campaign and the metrics that resulted. The paper and the success of the metrics then need to be analyzed and verified by PriceWaterhouseCooper prior to being submitted to the jury. That is just to get in the door. Then the real scrutiny begins as the judges attempt to determine the overall effectiveness of the campaign. Survive all that and you have a shot at glory.

Huge congrats to W+K for their win and a truly amazing campaign.

  • Facebook 1914: What If Facebook Existed During World War I?

    / Comments (0)

One year of history, 1914, told through the words, images and emotions of Leon Vivien on Facebook (as if it were around at the time) — a French soldier sent to the front to fight for his country and life. The campaign led up to the launch of a WWI exhibit at the Museum of the Great War. Exceptional work from DDB Paris.
